Amaravati is the capital city of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is situated in the Guntur district on the right bank of the Krishna River, located approximately 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) southwest of Vijayawada.
The city derives its name from the nearby historic site of Amaravathi. This location served as the capital of the Satavahana Empire nearly two thousand years ago.
