Wasit was an early Islamic city located in present-day Iraq. It was established during the 8th century by al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, the Umayyad viceroy of Iraq. The city served as a strategic seat of power for the Umayyad governor and functioned as a garrison for troops tasked with enforcing Umayyad rule throughout the region.
The city was situated between the two traditional administrative centers and garrisons of Kufa and Basra, which gave it its name. Although it was abandoned centuries after its founding, the ruins remain located in the Wasit Governorate, southeast of Kut in southeastern Iraq.
