The city's political status remains a subject of international dispute. Israel has claimed the entirety of Jerusalem as its capital since 1980 and maintains its primary governmental institutions there. Conversely, Palestine declares East Jerusalem as its capital city. The international community generally rejects the annexation of East Jerusalem, considering it illegal and viewing the area as Palestinian territory occupied by Israel.
