Timika is a chartered city (kota) located on the southern coast of Central Papua in Indonesia. It serves as the capital of the Mimika Regency. According to the 2020 Census, the district encompassing the town had a population of 142,909.
The region is primarily focused on mining, industry, and services. It hosts numerous national-scale companies due to the presence of the PT Freeport Indonesia gold mine. Consequently, Timika is a significant concentration of foreign nationals residing in Papua, with approximately 2,000 expatriates from the United States and others from Japan, Canada, Australia, and Germany, most of whom work in the PT Freeport Indonesia area.
