Wamena, also known as the District of Wamena (Distrik Wamena), is a large town located in the Western New Guinea region of Indonesia. It serves as the seat of Jayawijaya Regency and is the largest town in the province of Highland Papua. The town is situated within the Baliem Valley.
Wamena functions as the urban center for a rural area that contains the highest population concentration in Highland Papua, with over 300,000 people living in the Baliem Valley and its surrounding regions. The local population consists of several related ethnic groups, most notably the Dani, Lani, and Yali. As of the 2020 Census, the town had a population of 64,967, with an official estimate of 66,080 in mid-2023.
