Sorong is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of Southwest Papua. Situated on the western tip of the island of New Guinea, its only land border is with Sorong Regency. As of mid-2024, the city has an estimated population of 286,028 residents.
The city serves as a primary logistics hub for Indonesia's eastern oil and gas frontier and acts as the gateway to the Raja Ampat Islands, which are recognized for their significant coral reef biodiversity. Sorong experienced rapid growth starting in 2010 and is expected to expand further as road links are established with other towns in Papua's Bird's Head Peninsula.
The suburban regions surrounding the city feature tropical rainforest and mangrove forests. These areas have gained popularity as ecotourism destinations, particularly for wildlife and birdwatching activities.
