Tanjungpinang is the capital city of the Indonesian province of Riau Islands. It covers a land area of 149.64 km2, primarily situated in the southwestern part of Bintan Island, while also encompassing smaller islands such as Dompak Island and Penyengat Island.
The city is the second largest in the province, following Batam. According to the 2020 Census, its population was 227,663, with a mid-2025 estimate of approximately 241,266 residents. Historically, Tanjungpinang is recognized as a city of Malay culture that served as the capital for both the Johor Sultanate and the Riau-Lingga Sultanate.
