Manokwari is a coastal town located in Indonesia that serves as the capital of the West Papua province. It also functions as the administrative seat of the Manokwari Regency. Notably, it is one of only seven provincial capitals in Indonesia that does not hold official city status.
The town was historically known by Europeans as Dory, Doréry, or Dorey. While there have been proposals to split the town from the regency to establish it as a separate city, these plans were suspended following a 2013 government moratorium on the creation of new regencies and cities.
The majority of residents in Manokwari are Christians. The town serves as one of the seats for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manokwari–Sorong.
