Makassar, formerly known as Ujung Pandang, serves as the capital city of the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi. It is situated on the southwest coast of the island of Sulawesi and faces the Makassar Strait.

As a major urban center, it is the largest city in the region of Eastern Indonesia. It ranks as the fifth-largest city in the country, following Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, and Bandung.
