South Tangerang, commonly abbreviated as Tangsel, is a city located in the Banten province of Indonesia. It is situated approximately 30 km (19 mi) on the southwestern border of Jakarta and serves as an integral part of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area. The city was administratively established as a separate entity from Tangerang Regency on November 26, 2008.
Covering a total area of 164.86 km² (63.65 sq mi), South Tangerang is the second-largest city in Banten by population. As of mid-2024, the official population estimate is 1,429,629 inhabitants. The city has experienced rapid growth as a satellite city for Jakarta, driven largely by the development of commerce and business districts within large-scale planned towns created by private developers.
