Pagar Alam is a city located in the province of South Sumatra, Indonesia. It was established as an independent city on June 21, 2001, after being separated from Lahat Regency, where it previously served as an administrative city. The city covers an area of 625.91 km² and is situated approximately 298 km southwest of the provincial capital, Palembang.
The city is positioned by the Bukit Barisan Mountains at the foot of Mount Dempo, a volcano that stands as the highest mountain in South Sumatra at 3,159 meters. Due to its highland location, Pagar Alam maintains a cooler climate than many other cities in the province. It serves as a primary supplier of vegetables for Palembang and is a prominent tourist destination known for its landscape.
