Historically, Semarang was a major port during the Dutch colonial era. In recent years, it has been recognized for its environmental standards, earning the title of the cleanest tourist destination in Southeast Asia by the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard (ACTCS) for the period of 2020–2022.
