Kedatuan refers to a historical designation for semi-independent city-states or principalities located throughout ancient Maritime Southeast Asia. These polities were situated across regions that correspond to the modern-day nations of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
In contemporary Indonesian and Malay contexts, these entities can be described as kingdoms or distinct political units. The earliest known written record of the term kadatuan is found in the 7th-century Srivijayan Telaga Batu and Kota Kapur inscriptions located on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia.
