Binjai, formally known as Kota Binjai, is an independent city located in the North Sumatra province of Indonesia. It is situated between the Deli Serdang Regency to the east and the Langkat Regency to the west. The city is connected to Medan, which lies approximately 22 km to the east, via the Sumatra highway that leads toward Banda Aceh.
Due to its proximity to Medan, Binjai effectively forms a part of Greater Medan. The city's population has shown steady growth over recent decades, rising from 181,904 in the 1990 Census to an estimated 310,932 by mid-2025. Additionally, the neighboring Binjai District in Langkat Regency, located immediately north of the city limits, houses approximately 50,654 inhabitants.
