Pisa is a city and comune located in the Tuscany region of Central Italy. It sits along the Arno River just before it empties into the Ligurian Sea and serves as the capital city of the Province of Pisa.
The city is internationally recognized for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but it also features an extensive collection of historical architecture. This includes more than twenty historic churches and various medieval and Renaissance palaces, many of which are situated along the avenues of the Arno known as "Lungarno." Much of this architectural heritage was funded during the city's history as one of the Italian maritime republics.
