The Bugis are an Austronesian ethnic group located in South Sulawesi, situated on the island of Sulawesi in southwestern Indonesia. They represent the most numerous of the three major linguistic and ethnic groups within this region.
Historically, the Bugis converted from animism to Islam in 1605. While the majority of the population is Muslim, a small minority adheres to Christianity or Tolotang, which is a pre-Islamic indigenous belief system.
