Bontang is a city located on the eastern coast of the island of Borneo in Indonesia. It is situated within the province of East Kalimantan.
The city occupies a land area of 160.62 km2 (62.02 sq mi). According to census data, the population was 140,787 in 2010 and 178,917 in 2020, with an official estimate of 194,606 people as of mid-2025. Bontang is recognized as the third most densely populated place in East Kalimantan, following Balikpapan and Samarinda.
