Pontianak is the capital city of the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, located on the island of Borneo (Kalimantan). Founded originally as a trading port, the city occupies an area of 118.21 km² situated in the delta of the Kapuas River at its junction with the Landak River.
The city is notably positioned precisely on the equator, earning it the nickname Kota Khatulistiwa. Its city center is located less than 3 kilometres south of this line. As of mid-2025, Pontianak had an estimated population of 686,019, making it the fourth most populous city on the island of Borneo and the 23rd most populous city in Indonesia.
