Surabaya is the capital and largest city of East Java province in Indonesia. Located on the northeastern corner of Java island along the Madura Strait, it is recognized as one of the earliest port cities in Southeast Asia. It serves as one of the four main central cities of Indonesia, alongside Jakarta, Medan, and Makassar.
The city covers a land area of 335.93 km2 and has a population of approximately 3,018,022 people as of mid-2024. The broader Surabaya metropolitan area exceeds 10 million residents, making it the second-largest metropolitan area in Indonesia. Economically, the Surabaya metropolitan area ranks as the sixth-largest economy in ASEAN, with a 2023 Gross Regional Product (GRP) PPP estimated at US$150.294 billion.
