Mount Penanggungan is a small stratovolcano located in the East Java province on the island of Java, Indonesia. It is situated immediately north of the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex and lies approximately 40 kilometers south of the city of Surabaya, where it remains visible on clear days.
The mountain is characterized by surrounding lava flows and pyroclastic deposits. Its western slope is notable for hosting several Hindu-Buddhist sanctuaries, monuments, and other sacred places dating between AD 977 and 1511.
