Bluto is a fictional character primarily known as the main antagonist in the theatrical Popeye animated cartoon series. He was originally created in 1932 by Elzie Crisler Segar as a one-time character named "Bluto the Terrible" for his Thimble Theatre comic strip, making his first appearance on September 12 of that year.
The character was later adapted by Fleischer Studios in 1933. While he originated in comics, he became widely recognized through his role as a recurring villain in the animated productions.
