The Bateke, also known as the Teke people or Tyo, are a Bantu Central African ethnic group. They primarily inhabit the south, north, and center regions of the Republic of the Congo, as well as the western portion of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A minority population of this group resides in the southeast of Gabon.
The Bateke people speak Teke languages. Notable historical figures from this ethnic group include Omar Bongo, who served as the President of Gabon during the late 20th century.
