The tree can reach heights of approximately 30 meters and is characterized by its large glossy leaves and spherical clusters of fragrant flowers. These flowers develop into edible but bitter fruits that are roughly the size of golf balls. The species is also known by various other common names, such as bur tree, canary wood, Leichhardt pine, and yellow cheesewood.
The soft wood of the bangkal tree, which ranges in color from yellowish to orange, is utilized for timber and woodcarving. Additionally, parts of the tree are used in traditional folk medicine.
