Surakarta, commonly referred to as Solo, is a major city located in Central Java, Indonesia. The city covers an area of approximately 46.72 km2 (18.04 sq mi) and is bordered by several surrounding regencies. It adjoins Karanganyar Regency and Boyolali Regency to the north, Karanganyar Regency and Sukoharjo Regency to the east and west, and Sukoharjo Regency to the south.
The Solo River flows along the eastern side of the city. As of mid-2023 official estimates, the metropolitan area—which includes Surakarta City and six surrounding regencies—had a population of 6,837,753 inhabitants, with 526,870 residents living within the city proper.
