Salatiga is an independent city located in the Central Java province of Indonesia. It serves as an enclave within the Semarang Regency and is situated between the cities of Semarang and Surakarta. The city covers a total area of 54.98 km2 (21.23 sq mi) and is considered part of the broader Semarang metropolitan area.
The city is characterized by its elevated geographic position at the foot of Mount Merbabu and Mount Telomoyo. This location provides Salatiga with a relatively cool climate compared to surrounding regions. As of the 2020 Census, the population was recorded at 192,322, with an official estimate of 198,971 as of mid-2024.
