Purwokerto is a large, non-autonomous town located on the island of Java in Indonesia. It serves as the coordinating center for local government and holds the status of the largest city in southwestern Central Java. Additionally, Purwokerto functions as the capital of the Banyumas Regency within the Central Java province.
The town is comprised of four districts. According to census data, the population of these districts was 233,951 in 2010 and 229,271 in 2020, with an official estimate of 236,162 as of mid-2024. The built-up area of Purwokerto extends into surrounding districts, contributing to a metropolitan area population that was recorded at 416,964 during the 1990 Census.
