Magelang is a city located in the province of Central Java, Indonesia. It is one of six cities in the region that are administratively independent of the regencies in which they are geographically situated, meaning it is governed by a mayor rather than a bupati.
Geographically, the city is positioned in the middle of the Magelang Regency between Mount Merbabu and Mount Sumbing in the southern part of the province. It lies approximately 43 km north of Yogyakarta, 15 km north of Mungkid, and 75 km south of Semarang, which serves as the capital of Central Java.
The city covers a total area of 18.56 km2. According to census data, its population was 118,227 in 2010 and 121,526 in 2020, with an official estimate reaching 128,709 as of mid-2024.
