Calang is the capital city of the Aceh Jaya Regency, located within the special territory of Aceh on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It serves as a regional administrative center for its surrounding district.
The town was significantly impacted by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and the resulting tsunami. Reports indicate that the disaster caused the city to largely vanish, leaving behind only scattered shards of concrete. Of the approximately 12,000 residents who lived in Calang at the time, it is estimated that only about 30 per cent survived the event.
