Banda Aceh is the capital and largest city in the province of Aceh, located on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It sits at an elevation of 35 metres (115 ft) and covers a total area of 61.36 square kilometers (23.69 sq mi).
The city's population has seen steady growth over recent decades, recorded at 223,446 during the 2010 Census and increasing to 252,899 by the 2020 Census. As of 2025, the official estimate for the city's population is 267,962.
