Esztergom is a city with county rights located in northern Hungary, situated approximately 46 kilometres northwest of the capital, Budapest. It lies in Komárom-Esztergom County on the right bank of the Danube river, which serves as the border between Hungary and Slovakia at this location.
Historically, Esztergom served as the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary from the 10th century until the mid-13th century. The royal seat was eventually moved to Buda during the reign of King Béla IV.
