Zaïre was a country located in Central Africa that existed from 1965 to 1997. It was officially known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1965 to 1971 and the Republic of Zaïre from 1971 to 1997. During this period, the nation was headed by Mobutu Sese Seko.
The country was significant for its size and demographics, ranking as the third-largest country in Africa by area and the 11th-largest in the world between 1965 and 1991. With a population exceeding 23 million people, it was the most populous Francophone nation on the African continent.
Zaïre held strategic importance for Western nations, particularly the United States, during the Cold War as a counterbalance to Soviet influence in Africa. To prevent the spread of communism, U.S. and allied governments provided the Mobutu regime with both military and economic aid, making the country a key site for American involvement in the region.
