Matulji is a municipality located in northwestern Croatia within the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It is situated approximately 10 kilometers west of the city of Rijeka and north of the town of Opatija, sharing a border with Slovenia.
The settlement first appeared in written historical records during the middle of the 17th century under the name Matuglia. By the beginning of the 19th century, official documentation began recording the location by its current name, Matulji.
