Tai Po is an area located in the New Territories of Hong Kong. The name historically refers to the vicinity of two traditional market towns situated near the old Tai Po Market railway station of the Kowloon-Canton Railway: Tai Po Old Market (Tai Po Kau Hui) on the north side of the Lam Tsuen River, and Tai Po Hui on Fu Shin Street to the south.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, both market towns were incorporated into the development of the Tai Po New Town. In contemporary usage, the term "Tai Po" can refer specifically to the area surrounding the original market towns, the larger Tai Po New Town, or the entire Tai Po District.
