Cheung Chau is an outlying island located in the Islands District of Hong Kong. It is situated approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) southwest of Hong Kong Island and is commonly referred to as Dumbbell Island because of its distinctive dumbbell-like shape.
The island has a long history of human habitation, having been inhabited for longer than most other locations in Hong Kong. As of the 2011 census, Cheung Chau had a population of 22,740 residents.
