Anna Regina is the capital city of the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region in Guyana. It is situated on the Atlantic coast, northwest of the mouth of the Essequibo River. The town was officially established in 1990 under President Desmond Hoyte following the merger of 18 villages. Its origins date back to an early 1800s Dutch plantation named in memory of two daughters belonging to a British planter who drowned there.
The local economy has transitioned from a historical reliance on sugar production to rice manufacturing. The town is characterized by a uniform, high-rainfall tropical rainforest climate and serves as a site for several landmarks commemorating labor and civil rights protests, including the 1972 Devonshire Castle Monument and the 1988 Damon Monument. As of the 2022 census, Anna Regina has a population of 11,846 residents, accounting for 21% of the region's total population.
