San Andrés Semetabaj is a municipality located in the Sololá department of Guatemala. The name of the town is derived from a combination of linguistic roots: the Spanish word "semet," referring to a bottle or flask and by extension glass, and the K'akch'iquel word "abaj," which means stone. According to Jorge Luis Arriola's Geonimias de Guatemala, the name Semetabaj translates to "stone of glass-like appearance.
The municipality was originally known as San Andrés Limetabaj before its current designation. It remains a recognized administrative division within the highland region of the country.
