The name Sibinal is derived from the terms mam tziben, meaning "Writing," and nal, which refers to "Bernard writings." Founded in February 1799, the municipality serves as a notable point for climbers seeking to ascend Volcano Tacaná. The village of Sibinal specifically functions as one of the primary starting points for these expeditions.
