Antigua Guatemala, commonly referred to as Antigua or La Antigua, is a city located in the central highlands of Guatemala. It serves as the capital for both the municipality of Antigua Guatemala and the Sacatepéquez Department.
The city served as the seat of the Captaincy General of Guatemala from 1543 until 1773. Due to this history, much of its urban layout and Baroque-influenced architecture dates back to that period.
