Poptún is a municipality located in the El Petén department of Guatemala. It covers a total area of 1,128 km² and is situated approximately 385 km from the nation's capital, Guatemala City.
The population of the municipality was recorded at 35,663 during the 2002 Census, with more recent official estimates placing the figure at 64,988. Since 1989, Poptún has served as the location for Military Zone 23, which houses the Guatemalan Army's elite Kaibiles special operations force.
