Santiago Chimaltenango is a town and municipality located in the department of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. The municipality takes its name in honor of the Apostle St James.
The region is primarily inhabited by the Mam people, who are the predominant ethnic group in the area. Consequently, the Mam language is widely spoken throughout the municipality. The local community maintains significant ties to the United States, with an estimated 10% of the population living abroad, primarily in California and Florida, specifically within the cities of Oakland and Los Angeles.
The town hosts annual festivals held from July 21st to July 25th. These celebrations serve as a notable cultural event for the local population.
