Grytviken is a hamlet located in South Georgia, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean within the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands region. It is situated at the head of King Edward Cove in Cumberland East Bay, which is regarded as the best harbor on the island.
The site served as a significant whaling station and was once the largest settlement on the island. The name Grytviken, meaning "pot bay," was coined in 1902 by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition and documented by surveyor Johan Gunnar Andersson after they discovered old English try pots used for rendering seal oil. Norwegian explorer Carl Anton Larsen re-established a settlement at this location on November 16, 1904, on the site of former whaling operations.
