The kea is a species of large parrot belonging to the family Strigopidae. It is endemic to the forested and alpine regions of New Zealand's South Island. The bird measures approximately 48 cm (19 in) in length and features an olive-green body with bright orange underwings and a large, narrow, curved grey-brown upper beak.
This omnivorous species primarily feeds on roots, leaves, berries, nectar, and insects, though it also consumes carrion. Historically, the kea was hunted for bounties because sheep farmers were concerned that the birds attacked livestock. Due to these pressures, the population became uncommon, leading to its inclusion under absolute protection by the Wildlife Act in 1986.
