Lavrio, also known as Lavrion or Laurium, is a town located in the southeastern part of Attica, Greece. It serves as the seat of the municipality of Lavreotiki and is situated within the Athens metropolitan area.
The region was historically significant during Classical antiquity for its silver mines, which served as one of the primary sources of revenue for the Athenian state. This silver was predominantly utilized for the production of coinage. Today, the Archaeological Museum of Lavrion preserves and displays artifacts related to the history of these mining operations.
