Kythira, also known by the transliterations Cythera, Kythera, and Kithira, is an island located in Greece. It lies opposite the south-eastern tip of the Peloponnese peninsula. While it is traditionally listed as one of the seven main Ionian Islands, it is situated at a significant distance from the primary group.
Administratively, the island belongs to the Islands regional unit within the Attica region. Despite its geographic location, it is distant from the Saronic Islands where the rest of Attica is centered. As a municipality, Kythira also includes the nearby island of Antikythera to its south.
