Nafplio, also known as Nauplio, is a coastal city situated in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It serves as the administrative capital of the regional unit of Argolis and remains a significant destination for tourism.
The city was founded in antiquity and developed into an important seaport during the Middle Ages under the Frankokratia. During this period, it was part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, which was initially held by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before passing to the Republic of Venice and eventually the Ottoman Empire.
Nafplio holds a notable place in Greek history as it served as the first official capital of the modern Greek state from 1827 to 1834.
