Kalamata is a city located in southern Greece on the Peloponnese peninsula. It serves as the largest city within its namesake administrative region and holds the position of the second most populous city in the Peloponnese, following Patras.

The city functions as the capital and primary port of the Messenia regional unit. Geographically, it is situated along the Nedon River at the head of the Messenian Gulf.
