Chalkida, also known as Chalkís or Halkida, is the chief city of the Greek island of Euboea. It is situated on the Euripus Strait at its narrowest point.
The name of the city is preserved from antiquity and is derived from the Greek word for copper or bronze, although there are no known mines in the area. During the Late Middle Ages, the city was also known by the Italian name Negropont(e), which has also been used to refer to the entire island of Euboea.
