Agrinio is the largest city and municipality in the Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit of Greece. It serves as the economic center of the region, though Mesolonghi remains its administrative capital. Located in Western Greece, it is the second largest city in that area after Patras.
The settlement has roots dating back to ancient times. The site of Ancient Agrinion was located approximately 3 kilometres northeast of the current city, where archaeological excavations have revealed walls and foundations. Historically, the city was known as Vrachori from the medieval period until 1836.
According to the 2021 census, the municipality of Agrinio has a total population of 89,691 people. Of this population, 50,690 residents live within the city limits of Agrinio itself.
