Komotini is a city located in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace in northeastern Greece. It serves as the capital of both the region and the Rhodope district. Historically, it functioned as the administrative center of the Rhodope-Evros super-prefecture until that entity was abolished in 2010 under the Kallikratis Plan.
The city is home to a sizeable Muslim minority that was exempted from the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Additionally, Komotini hosts the Democritus University of Thrace, which was established in 1973. According to the 2021 census, the municipality of Komotini had a total population of 65,243 citizens.
