Karyes is a village located in the southern part of Greece on the Peloponnese peninsula. It belongs to the state of Laconia, where Sparta serves as the capital city.
The name Karyes is derived from the word for "walnut," reflecting the abundance of walnut trees in the area. The village is also known by the name Arahova, which is believed to have originated from a Slavic word for walnut. Due to its name, it should not be confused with other locations in Greece such as Karyes on Mount Athos, Pieria, or Chios.
The village is historically significant as the birthplace of the six caryatid maidens. These figures are featured in the architecture of the ancient and world-famous Erectheion on the Athenian Acropolis, where they serve as decorative supports in place of columns.
